141 Nigerians Arrested in Accra Over Cybercrime Scams

Accra, Ghana — December 27, 2025
In a sweeping early-morning operation, Ghanaian security agencies have arrested 141 Nigerian nationals in the suburbs of Lashibi and Tabora, Accra, for their alleged involvement in a series of cyber-enabled financial crimes. The suspects are believed to be part of an organized network targeting mobile money platforms and business email systems.

The operation, led by the Cyber Security Authority (CSA) in collaboration with the Ghana Police Service, National Security, and the Ghana Immigration Service, was described as “intelligence-led and coordinated” by the Minister for Communications, Digital Technology and Innovations, Sam Nartey George.

“This morning, the Cyber Security Authority Ghana, in collaboration with the Ghana Police Service, National Security, and the Ghana Immigration Service HQ, conducted a coordinated early-morning operation targeting organised cybercrime networks involved in Mobile Money fraud and Business Email Compromise scams,” said Minister George.

Breakdown of the Arrests:

  • 100 suspects were apprehended in Tabora
  • 41 suspects were arrested in Lashibi
  • A Ghanaian landlord who housed 100 of the suspects was also taken into custody

Authorities seized 38 laptops and 150 mobile phones, believed to be tools used in executing scams such as:

  • Mobile Money (MoMo) fraud
  • Business Email Compromise (BEC)
  • Romance scams
  • Sextortion
  • Wire fraud

Forensic Investigations Underway

The CSA has initiated forensic analysis of the seized devices to trace digital footprints and uncover the full extent of the criminal network. Officials say the suspects will face prosecution under Ghana’s cybercrime laws.

Public Reaction and Next Steps

The arrests have sparked public debate on cross-border cybercrime and the need for tighter digital security protocols. Minister George emphasized the importance of regional cooperation and digital literacy to combat such threats.

“Cybercrime is a borderless threat. We must strengthen our defenses and ensure our digital platforms are secure,” he added.
